About Sea Studio

California Institute of the Arts /Creating Ecolibrium Studio / Shannon Scrofano, Faculty /Pando Days Project 2022

Sea Studio brings together artists and designers to look imaginatively at the crisis under the surface, through the lenses of aquaculture, bio-materials, pollution, habitat loss and biodiversity, as well as exploring the ocean’s role in water and carbon cycles. In dialogue with scientists and leading ocean researchers, students are designing mobile, interactive learning installations and experiences illuminating the ocean’s underimagined role in planetary health.

Scientists estimate that 50-80% of the oxygen produced on Earth comes from the oceans. Oceans drive the climate of the planet and influence everything fro our food supply to our air quality. The oceans have absorbed 90% of the warming that has occurred in recent decades due to the human-accelerated increase in greenhouse gases, and the top few meters of the ocean store as much heat as the Earth’s entire atmosphere.

Sea Studio takes an interdisciplinary approach to addressing the critical state of the oceans and creating kinship with this vast blue world, holding sustained space for the arts to create engaging translations of the science, and to consistently support colleagues and communities working on the frontlines of climate, justice, and solutions with the oceans front of mind.

Less than 5% of countries mandate educational curriculum about the oceans, resulting in a serious ocean literacy deficit. The word “ocean” is in the Green New Deal only one time. Despite 40% of the global population living in coastal communities, the oceans are too often an afterthought. We need to equip people to change the conversation around the importance of ocean health in their families, circles, and communities.

Next steps include making prototypes, deepening partnerships, and connecting to funding. We have the opportunity to test installations at the Port of Los Angeles as a part of public events, including the annual Blue Hour. We are also working with the team at EcoConsciousness 2023 to present work on campus and in other sites throughout LA in September 2023. We have begun early conversations with a few museums and public locations about pop-up installations at other strategic sites.

Change your mindWhat behavioral science has to do with it, in conversation with Livya Howard-Bashar

What really changes minds? Hearing the same thing, repeated, from trusted sources.

There are six categories that help us think about behavioral change. rare.org is a great resource on working for change in coastal communities, and thinks about them as “levers” that can be pulled individually or together.

1_ Emotional Appeals _ using emotion to persuade is REAL; just ask Aristotle

2_ Social Influence _ leveraging behavior, beliefs and expectations of others

3_ Choice Architecture _ changing the context in which choices are made, and reducing friction to the behavior change
4_ Information _ providing information about what the desired behavior is, why it matters, and how to do it
5_ Material Incentives _ increasing or decreasing real or perceived costs, time, and effort for doing a behavior
6_ Rules & Regulations _ enacting rules that constrict or promote a behavior

Project Description
The goal is to build art galleries at LA and San Francisco ports using biomaterials and bioplastics. Two exhibition areas were involved: photography and installation.Core QuestionsHow long does it take for waste to decompose? How much marine life is plastic killing each day? What might buildings from biomaterials look like? How can we reuse waste inspired?Context
According to the United Nations Environmental Program, up to 12.7 million metric tons of plastic made its way into the ocean in just one year. 100 million marine animals die each year from plastic waste alone. Plastic has been found in over 60% of all seabirds and in 100% of sea turtles that mistake plastic for food. Currently, 79% of plastic is sent to landfills or the ocean, only 9% is recycled, and 12% is incinerated.Additional Info
The exhibition area inside the gallery is divided into two parts. When the audience enters the door, there is a photography exhibition. The photos represent all marine life persecuted by plastic waste and garbage floating on the sea. These photos are hung next to each other, and the audience has to pass through them. The second area displays large-scale installations made by artists using collected plastic waste. We try to awaken people's attention to waste issues and awareness of ocean protection. We can contribute to the ocean's ecological balance by turning plastic waste into reusable material.

	Project Description

The Plastics Problem is an immersive experience that takes audience members through a choose your own adventure style event where they get to see where recycled vs non recycled waste goes. Unknown to the audience at the beginning, only 9% of plastic is actually recycled properly, with the rest of plastics ending up in the same management cycle as most other waste. At the end, audiences will be presented with different ways to actually help reduce plastic waste throughout ecosystem.

	Landfills:
The majority of waste (both recycled and non recycled) ends up in landfills. 91% of all plastics end up in landfills.

Incinerators:16% of plastics are incinerated, which emits gases and toxins into the air, which is harmful to surrounding ecosystems.

	Core Questions

What actually happens to our waste once it is thrown into the bins?

Where does waste go?

What if there were a cultural shift around waste?

Additional Info
This project connects to Strategy 5B in the Los Angeles County Sustainability Plan, which focuses on preserving and enhancing open spaces, waterways, and priority ecological areas. Preservation is directly tied to eliminating waste from these areas, as waste ends up directly impacting food, health, vulberable species, habitats, and much more.

	Littered:
About 8 million metric tons of waste end up in the ocean each year. This waste damages the ecosystem, is eaten by wildlife and end up in food chain cycles. It also pollutes environments with toxins and microplastics.

The Tree House ProjectKento Shirotsuka (Graphic Design) & Lucas Lenique (Performer/Composer)

Project Description
The Tree House Project is aimed to encourage children to play outside, and get involved in physical activity in nature. A large-scale tree house would be designed and built based on the experience of a keystone species in the local environment, and inspired by Japanese athletic parks where children could complete challenges and advance up the treehouse.

For this version of the project, we focused on immersing the visitor in a beaver environment to understand how this species positively affects local ecosystems, and to prove how as individuals we can have a direct and positive effect on our surroundings. The beaver has disappeared from many of its former habitats, but is key to rehydrating the land and bringing local water cycles back in balance.

The activities would be made to understand the behavior of a beaver, their environment and their importance in the ecosystem. They would also be fun, challenging physically, in a pyramidal way (the more activities we complete, the more physical and subtle it becomes).
Goals: To create healthy and physical activity for the visitors + make the visitors sensitive to the environment and the part they could play in the balance of the ecosystem, following the lead of a species that plays a major part in theirs.
Core QuestionsHow can we educate young people about nature so they learn to protect and harness it?
How can we get children (7-15) aged children to play outside and boost creativity?
ContextNational Trust research showed that children are playing outside for an average of just over four hours a week. This compares unfavorably with 8.2 hours for their parents when they were children. What’s more, a study by the UK government found that 10% of respondents have not even been in a natural environment such as a park, forest or beach for at least a year.
Furthermore, the physical deterioration of younger children is often seen in this phenomenon due to minimal usage of muscle groups and proper diet.
This project also encourages audiences to focus on smaller details in nature and observe closely to how we interact with natures as humans.
Additional InfoRecent studies have exposed the benefit—even necessity—of spending time outdoors, both for kids and adults. Some argue that it can be any outdoor environment. Some claim it has to be a “green” environment—one with trees and leaves. Others still have shown that just a picture of greenery can benefit mental health. These nuances aside, most of the studies agree that kids who play outside are smarter, happier, more attentive, and less anxious than kids who spend more time indoors. While it’s unclear how exactly the cognitive functioning and mood improvements occur, there are a few things we do know about why nature is good for kids’ minds.
Children are after after all the next generation of humans, and it is crucial to bring their awareness to the importance of their relationship with nature. The planet is dying, and we all need to be aware of the part we can play in order to save it.

Trash Replacement AnimationJeremy Pappas (BFA Experimental Animation)

Project Description
My project is a replacement animation that is meant to raise awareness about
waste and ocean pollution in local areas. The idea of the project is to get groups
of people to gather as much trash as possible from beaches and then later put
these individual pieces of garbage under a camera and take pictures for the
animation. This type of animation is a rapid sequence of individual images that naturally create movement. Moreover, this collection of images would eventually turn into a film that could be screened on a large scale publicly. As these
thousands of images of trash flash across the screen sounds from various
commercials would play along with other audio that depicts the nature of
consumerism. Additionally, I imagine the animation to appear in a square in the
centre of a typical 1920x1080p screen with a backdrop of a timelapse of the corresponding beach where the trash was gathered.

The filmmaking process could be presented as a group project where some
people are in charge of getting the garbage while others are in charge of
animating the subjects under the camera. This would definitely increase
production speed.

I am hoping to use this experimental animation technique as an alternative to the typical corporate animation that you usually see in environmental PSAs. I feel like this project is a great way for experimental animators and people who care about the ocean to collaborate and raise awareness. This project is pretty straightforward and animation experience is not necessarily needed to assist.
There are options for whether you would like to collect the subjects for the piece or help work under the camera in production. Moreover, people with little
experience in animation can work under the camera as this replacement technique is very streamlined and simple.Impact
The main impact I would like this project to accomplish is displaying the true scale of waste to the general population. Rather than just telling people not to litter or to recycle, this film will simply display the impact of our modern way of life. Additionally, this film is not just putting the blame on individuals but rather
criticizing where our trash ends up and how companies make endless amounts
of unsustainable packaging.

Local EldersMichelle Fan (BFA1 Fine Arts)

Project Description
The project I have constructed and been developing throughout the past semester is an interactive art exhibit in which members of the local community are encouraged to further their understanding and appreciation of native marine flora and fauna by inviting them to create visual depictions of these species, ultimately resulting in an accessible art gallery made by the community, for the community.

Core questions

How can hands-on activities contribute to stronger connections in learning?

How can the creative process of art-making cultivate understanding of and care for the subject matter?

How can visual representations be just as, if not more effective at inspiring action than verbal or written representations?
ContextThe past semester has been an amazing opportunity to develop my ideas through thoughtful discussion and hands-on experiences, and I’ve really been able to both broaden my understanding of the climate crisis as well as develop a specific focus on a subtopic I want to address, which is biodiversity conservation in marine ecosystems. Within all the material we were introduced to, something that especially impacted me was how much these native species, in their natural environments, can serve to act as a natural force opposing anthropogenic climate change— one example being the sequestering potential of mangroves.
