Project Description
The goal is to build art galleries at LA and San Francisco ports using biomaterials and bioplastics. Two exhibition areas were involved: photography and installation.

Core Questions
  • How long does it take for waste to decompose?
  • How much marine life is plastic killing each day?
  • What might buildings from biomaterials look like?
  • How can we reuse waste inspired?

Context
According to the United Nations Environmental Program, up to 12.7 million metric tons of plastic made its way into the ocean in just one year. 100 million marine animals die each year from plastic waste alone. Plastic has been found in over 60% of all seabirds and in 100% of sea turtles that mistake plastic for food. Currently, 79% of plastic is sent to landfills or the ocean, only 9% is recycled, and 12% is incinerated.

Additional Info
The exhibition area inside the gallery is divided into two parts. When the audience enters the door, there is a photography exhibition. The photos represent all marine life persecuted by plastic waste and garbage floating on the sea. These photos are hung next to each other, and the audience has to pass through them. The second area displays large-scale installations made by artists using collected plastic waste. We try to awaken people's attention to waste issues and awareness of ocean protection. We can contribute to the ocean's ecological balance by turning plastic waste into reusable material.
