Local Elders
Michelle Fan (BFA1 Fine Arts)

Project Description
The project I have constructed and been developing throughout the past semester is an interactive art exhibit in which members of the local community are encouraged to further their understanding and appreciation of native marine flora and fauna by inviting them to create visual depictions of these species, ultimately resulting in an accessible art gallery made by the community, for the community.

Core questions
How can hands-on activities contribute to stronger connections in learning?

How can the creative process of art-making cultivate understanding of and care for the subject matter?

How can visual representations be just as, if not more effective at inspiring action than verbal or written representations?

Context
The past semester has been an amazing opportunity to develop my ideas through thoughtful discussion and hands-on experiences, and I’ve really been able to both broaden my understanding of the climate crisis as well as develop a specific focus on a subtopic I want to address, which is biodiversity conservation in marine ecosystems. Within all the material we were introduced to, something that especially impacted me was how much these native species, in their natural environments, can serve to act as a natural force opposing anthropogenic climate change— one example being the sequestering potential of mangroves.
